Sports & Recreation Project

Sports & Recreation Construction

Built for performance. Designed for community.

Great facilities do more than host games. They bring people together.

From local arenas to large-scale recreation spaces, these projects need to perform under constant use while creating an experience people want to come back to.

At Southwest and Midwest Design & Construction (SWMW), we bring over 45 years of experience delivering sports and recreation construction projects across Alberta. Our focus is simple. Build spaces that are durable, functional, and built for real use.

Planning a project? Let’s start the conversation.

Built for How People Use the Space

Sports and recreation facilities are always in motion.

Athletes, families, staff, and community members all use the space differently, often at the same time. That means layout, flow, durability, and safety all need to work together.

At SWMW, we design with that in mind.

Whether it’s a multi-use facility, fitness space, campground, or community structure, we focus on how the building will function day to day. The goal isn’t just to build it. It’s to make sure it works.

Why Design-Build Works for Recreation Projects

Recreation projects often involve multiple stakeholders, tight budgets, and fixed timelines.

Our design-build approach simplifies the process.

With one team managing both design and construction, communication stays clear and decisions happen faster. That means fewer delays, better cost control, and a smoother experience from start to finish.

You get one point of contact and a team that’s aligned from day one.

Featured Project

At SWMW, our portfolio spans over four decades – and reflects our expertise as a premier sports and recreation facility contractor in Alberta. These two projects standout to us as true examples of our commitment to quality, innovation, and community impact.

Community Knowledge Campus Grandstand

Located at the Community Knowledge Campus (CKC) in Grande Prairie, Alberta, this new grandstand was designed to give Northwestern Alberta a modern venue capable of hosting both provincial and national sporting events. Built to support the region’s growing commitment to youth athletics and community recreation, the facility delivers the functionality, capacity, and modern design needed for high-level competition.

The grandstand includes eight change rooms, showers, training rooms, a press booth, and concession areas, creating a well-rounded facility for athletes, event organizers, and spectators alike.

Capacity and Functionality

Designed with both performance and user experience in mind, the CKC Grandstand can accommodate 850 spectators in the stands along with an additional 1,200 people on the upper concourse. This makes the facility well suited for major tournaments, community events, and large-scale athletic gatherings.

Its layout and supporting amenities provide the infrastructure needed to host events efficiently while creating a comfortable and engaging environment for participants and fans.

Project Outcome

Completed on schedule in time to host the 2018 Alberta Summer Games, this project reflects SWMW’s ability to deliver important community-focused facilities under firm timelines. The finished grandstand is a modern addition to the CKC and a strong reflection of Grande Prairie’s investment in sport, recreation, and youth development across Alberta’s Northwest.
